Benefits

UT for Me was created to ensure all Longhorns have access to the resources and support they need for a successful college career. UT for Me students receive a brand-new laptop, textbook credits to purchase course materials and individualized support to navigate financial, academic and personal circumstances.

Qualifying students invited to UT for Me are required to complete two simple steps to confirm their attendance in the program. Students must complete these actions prior to the 12th class day of the fall semester of their initial year to receive program benefits:

  1. Sign the program’s Terms & Conditions
  2. Complete the program’s initial survey in Canvas, which is UT’s learning management platform and the online home for many courses and for programs like UT for Me. After signing the Terms & Conditions, students will receive an email inviting them to the UT for Me Canvas course.

Before their first fall semester begins, all incoming UT for Me students receive a brand new laptop that is theirs to keep, ensuring they have the technology to support their current studies and future professional endeavors.

How does a student know if they’re getting a laptop from UT for Me?
The laptop is indicated as a credit on the student’s initial Financial Aid Notification (FAN).

What kind of laptop do UT for Me students get?
UT for Me students receive a brand new laptop based on two factors:

  1. The software needs of their college or school
  2. Product availability

Incoming students are notified by email of what laptop they will receive the summer before their first year begins.

Can UT for Me students trade their laptop for another model?
Students cannot trade their laptop for another model unless they need an accommodation through Disability and Access. Anticipated or hopeful major changes are not included. To begin the process of requesting an accommodation, students should email utforme@austin.utexas.edu with their UT EID, and UT for Me will connect them with the appropriate Disability and Access resources.

When do UT for Me students get their laptop?
Laptop pickup begins shortly before the start of the fall semester, typically in mid-August.

Where do UT for Me students get their laptop?
Laptops are distributed by the Campus Computer Store, located in the Flawn Academic Center (FAC) on the UT campus. The Campus Computer Store contacts students directly to schedule a time to pick up their laptop.

Is the laptop theirs to keep?
Yes! Once a student receives their laptop, it is theirs to keep, even after graduating from the University.

What comes with the laptop?
Each laptop comes with Microsoft Office, an extended warranty and a complimentary UT for Me backpack!

Can UT for Me students use their UT for Me laptop credit to buy a laptop on their own?
No. Laptops are purchased by UT for Me and given to students by the Campus Computer Store.

Can students use their UT for Me laptop credit to cover other costs?
No. The UT for Me laptop award cannot be converted to cash or used to cover other costs.

Laptop Registration
When students start up their computer, they should not skip the registration step. This step changes the ownership of the laptop from the University to the student. In addition, this step will reset the warranty to the purchase date, which is very important. If needed, this step can be completed manually online.

UT for Me students receive a textbook credit of $250 every year up to four years to purchase course materials required for their classes from the University Co-op.

How does a student know if they’re getting textbook credits from UT for Me?
The UT for Me textbook credit is indicated as a credit on the student’s Financial Aid Notification (FAN).

If a student’s course materials total more than their remaining credit, the student is responsible for covering the difference.

What if a student’s course materials cost less than their textbook credit?
Any unused credit can be kept and used in the next academic year.
